El sotacaballo/ The Sotacaballo Tree

Parodiando a un poeta español del siglo XIX, hay flores que son estrellas, y hay estrellas que son árboles. Es probable que no haya conocido al sotacaballo, pero es casi seguro que este árbol encantador, que hunde sus raíces en nuestros ríos, fue antes una estrella que antes fue una flor.

Solo así se puede uno explicar que otras plantas se quieran hospedar en él, y que pajarillos y peces busquen sus frutos para alimentarse, y que sea, simplemente, tan alegre y colorido. Anne Señol ha sabido captarlo en palabras y Adián González en imágenes. Por ellos, no me cabe la menor duda de que el poeta estaría de acuerdo en que lo hayamos recordado aquí, así. (gbg)

According to a certain Spanish poet of the 19th century, there are flowers which are stars, and stars which are trees.

In all likelihood, young reader, you have never come across the Sotacaballo tree, but let me assure you of this: there is a strong possibility that this most wondrous tree, whose roots burrow down into Costa Rican soils, was at one time a star and before that, a flower.

It is the only way to explain why other plants seek refuge amidst its branches, why birds and fish alike covet its fruits for nourish- ment, and why the tree itself radiates such color and beauty.

In this little book, Anne Señol captures its  essence in words, while Adián González portrays it  poetically  through images. Without a doubt, our Spanish poet would agree that both have done the tree justice.
